Sports Physical Therapist · Boston, MA
I’m Lenny Macrina, a sports physical therapist and the co-founder of Champion PT and Performance in Waltham, MA, which I started with Mike Reinold in 2014. I’ve been treating athletes since 2003.
These days most of my caseload is ACL patients and throwers coming back from Tommy John surgery. My patients come from all over the country, from high school kids to college and pro athletes.
This site is where I share what I’m learning along the way. Blog posts, research, podcast episodes and my courses, written for the PTs, ATs and physicians who take care of athletes.
How I got here
I grew up in Winthrop, MA. I got my undergrad degree in biotechnology at WPI, then my Master’s in Physical Therapy at Boston University.
After that I headed south to Birmingham, Alabama. I worked at HealthSouth and later Champion Sports Medicine, and I got to train and work alongside Kevin Wilk and Dr. James Andrews, with Glenn Fleisig at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI). That’s where I learned how to treat the throwing shoulder and elbow, and the knee. Seeing how those guys worked every day shaped pretty much everything I do now.
Eventually Boston pulled me back home, and Mike and I opened Champion.
What I treat

Shoulders, elbows and knees, from the day after surgery all the way back to the field.
- ACL rehab. Criterion based, not calendar based. In my hands, slow and steady is the best approach.
- Tommy John and UCL injuries. Nonoperative, internal brace repair and reconstruction, with a return to throw plan built on workload data.
- The throwing shoulder, rotator cuff and labral injuries.
- Meniscus and cartilage surgery and the rest of the knee.
Research
I’ve been lucky to be part of a lot of research over the years. I’ve co-authored more than 25 peer reviewed papers in journals like AJSM, JOSPT and Sports Health. Most of it came out of my time at ASMI with Kevin, Glenn and Dr. Andrews, and more recently with Mike. A few I’m proud of:
- Our prospective studies on shoulder range of motion and injury risk in pro baseball pitchers (AJSM 2011, 2014 and 2015).
- The weighted baseball study looking at velocity, range of motion and injury rates (Sports Health 2018).
- The international consensus on ACL rehab for the 10-18 year old athlete (OJSM 2023).
- Our interval throwing programs built on workload data (IJSPT 2024 and 2026).
I also peer review for IJSPT and I’m a member of the American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society. You can see all of my research right here.
Teaching
I love teaching as much as treating. Here’s where you can learn with me:
- Knee Evaluation and Treatment, the online knee course I teach with Mike. ACL, meniscus, patellofemoral pain and return to sport.
- My MedBridge courses on the shoulder and elbow. Use code LENNY for money off a yearly subscription.
- The Ask Mike Reinold Podcast, hosted by Mike with the whole Champion PT team. We answer real questions from PTs, ATs and strength coaches, and I’m on every episode.
- Talks at national conferences on shoulder, elbow and knee rehab.
Credentials
- Master of Science in Physical Therapy, Boston University
- Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), NSCA
- Member, American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society
- Co-founder and Director of Physical Therapy, Champion PT and Performance
Outside the clinic
I live in Dedham with my wife and our two kids. When I’m not at the clinic, you’ll probably find me on the golf course, still trying to get under a 10 handicap.
Want to work with me?
If you’re an athlete looking for rehab, you can book with me at Champion. If you’re a clinician, the best way to keep up is the email list, Instagram or the podcast.
